Ajax still a championship contender

Ajax struggled for an hour at home against Heracles Almelo, until finally Heracles keeper Remko Pasveer let the ball slip out of his fingers, and Ajax’s Oleguer took grateful advantage. Siem de Jong and substitute Araz Özbiliz both went on to score, securing a score a 3-0 win for the Amsterdam club.

Ajax thus avoids slithering further behind Eredivisie front runner FC Twente, and closes the distance with PSV Eindhoven in second place.

ADO Den Haag, at number five in the Eredivisie, remains hot on the heels of Alkmaar club AZ at number four, with a 3-2 win against FC Utrecht. But Almaar club AZ kept one step ahead by beating Feyenoord 1-0 on Saturday. A final fourth position is good for a place in the Europa League.

The Eredivisie top five after 29 matches: 1. FC Twente 63 2. PSV 61 3. Ajax 58 4. AZ 52 5. ADO Den Haag 51
