Ajax slips further behind AZ in Dutch competition

In the Dutch football competition Ajax has slipped further behind AZ today after the Amsterdam club was hammered by Vitesse in Arnhem.

AMSTERDAM - The score was 4-1. As a result Marco van Basten's Ajax is now 14 points behind Alkmaar's AZ. AZ coach Lois van Gaal said his team had played very well against Willem II on Saturday in which AZ won 3-1 putting the shine back into the competition leader's game.

FC Utrecht beat ADO Den Haag 3-1 today, putting Utrecht into 7th place in the competition. ADO Den Haag had to play the second half with ten men after goalkeeper Robert Zwinkels was sent off at the end of the first half.

In Amelo on Saturday, Hercules drew 1-1 a home game against NEC in a match which was exciting to the very last moment.

Heerenveen struggled to beat NAC Breda 3-1 in Friesland on Saturday. Several members of NAC Breda were forced to watch the match from the bench due to injuries, and one suspension.

Limburg club Roda JC lost 0-1 to Sparta Rotterdam on Saturday.

Only a few Roda fans used to the game to vent their frustration at plans to merge with Fortuna Sittard.

Banners reading "Never FC Limburg" could be seen in the stadium and a few dozen fans held a short protest outside the main entrance after the match.
