AMSTERDAM — Danny Blind is stepping down as Ajax coach with immediate effect after only one season in charge, the management of the Amsterdam club said on Wednesday.

The announcement was expected as Blind's position has been in question for some time. He had a bad start as coach and Ajax finished fourth in the first division, 24 points behind champions PSV Eindhoven.

Ajax has performed better lately by qualifying for the third round of the Champions League via the play-offs. And the Amsterdam side won the Dutch Gatorade Cup on 7 May by beating PSV 2-1.

This was not enough to save Blind's job even though his contract had another year to run. Assistant coaches Gerard van der Lem and Ruud Krol are also leaving their posts.

Blind has had a long career at Ajax, first as a player, then youth coach and head of training. He signed on as head coach on 14 March last year when Ronald Koeman resigned after defeat in the UEFA Cup by Auxerre.

Ajax has not officially named a replacement but the name of Barcelona's Henk ten Cate has been widely mentioned in the media.
