The management and supervisory board of Amsterdam football club Ajax resigned on Wednesday during a special meeting of the club’s membership following a clash between the club’s executive and a technical working group led by club icon Johan Cruijff.

In a press release, Ajax said that the resignations were intended to give the club space to break out of a threatening impasse. Chairman Uri Coronel and executive officers Cor van Eijden and Joop Krant, all of whom are also members of the supervisory board, said that the continuing commotion was “extremely harmful” to Ajax.

On Thursday, Johan Cruijff clashed with the club executive about his plans for technical reform. The resignation of the incumbent executive would appear to clear the way for Johan Cruijff and former players Dennis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk to push through their plans with a new executive and supervisory board.
