In the Champions League, Ajax lost 2-1 against Auxerre in an away game. The defeat puts the Amsterdammers in third position in group G. The Dutch team is just one point ahead of the French.

If Ajax wants to stay in the competition for the Champions League it has to get into first or second place. The third team will join the Europa League. Ajax still has to play Real Madrid at home and AC Milan away.

Frédéric Sammaritano put Auxerre ahead just nine minutes into the game. Only in the 80th minute, did a header by Toby Alderweireld put the two teams on even pegging. It was Alderweireld's 100th goal for Ajax. But straight after the equaliser, substitute Steeven Langil scored for Auxerre following a free kick.
