"Ajax held to ransom by hooligans"
Fanatical Ajax supporters constantly threaten the club's management and personnel and have been doing so for years, according to the authoritative Dutch daily The hooligans have regularly succeeded in pushing through their own wishes and demands.
The paper reports that the children of Ajax officials have been waylaid at their schools by supporters. Some club directors have complained to the police, some were offered protection.
Ajax managers have regularly met fanatical supporters to discuss club business, including some who were officially banned from the stadium. The head of security at the Amsterdam club was replaced in 1988 after he took action against a supporter touting tickets.
Former director Franks Kales admits that the pressure from hooligans was often so great that Ajax had to concede to their demands: "You'd have to have been in the trenches to understand what it's like."
Ajax denies that its supporters have too much influence.
