In Sunday's Premiere League matches, Ajax's defeat at the hands of FC Groningen put them six points behind league front-runner AZ Alkmaar.

AMSTERDAM -- Playing away from home, Ajax lost 1-0 in the second half to Groningen. The defeat was made more painful when Ajax's trainer, Marcel van Barsten, got into an argument with the referee and was ordered off the field into the stands.

In other Premier League matches, ADO Den Haag beat FC Volendam 1-0 while Heracles Almelo lost 2-1 at home to FC Twente. FC Utrecht and Sparta Rotterdam drew 3-3 in Utrecht. Arnhem Vitesse and Nijmegen's NEC finished their match in Arnhem with a goalless draw.
