Companies planning to fire staff have asked the defence ministry to find employment for them in the military, which currently has 7,600 vacancies.

THE NETHERLANDS - Newspaper De Volkskrant reports that firms are trying to find temporary work for redundant mechanics, computer experts and administrative staff.

The MoD says it will approach some ten companies, including Corus and DAF Trucks.

Corus is to shed 800 staff and DAF, 170. The truck manufacturer does not rule out further job losses.
