THE HAGUE – Half of the 36 countries that receive development aid from the Netherlands have laws against homosexuality. The penalties in these countries range from prison time to the death sentence. In almost all of these countries homosexuals are discriminated against.

This has emerged from a study commissioned by Development Cooperation Minister Bert Koenders (PvdA). Koenders wants the Dutch embassies in these countries to actively urge that laws against homosexuality in these countries be scrapped, and that discrimination be combated. Koenders wrote this in a letter sent to Parliament on Wednesday.
