The Netherlands Architecture Institute is to bring a work of art by Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei to the Netherlands.

The work will form part of the exhibition ‘Dwarsdesign - Chinese en Nederlandse ontwerpers met lef’ Intractible design – Chinese and Dutch designers with guts which is scheduled to open in Rotterdam on 1 July.

Ai Weiwei won world fame for his participation in designing the Beijing Olympic stadium, the Bird’s Nest. He incurred the wrath of the Chinese authorities when he spoke out in favour of more internet freedom.

The work of art is currently located in a container on board a ship crossing the Atlantic en route to Rotterdam, where it is expected to arrive on Tuesday. It will be unveiled by the NAI on the same day.
