Adriaanse sacked as Qatar coach
Former Dutch footballer Co Adriaanse has been sacked from his position as head coach of Qatar’s Olympic football team.
Qatar’s Olympic committee has issued a statement on its website saying that its vision differs too much from that of Adriaanse. The 63-year old Dutchman’s appointment in January 2010 as the man to lead the national team to the games in London drew huge media attraction in the Gulf.
It’s not the first professional disappointment for Adriaanse in Qatar. He was coach with Al Sadd from August 2007 until January 2008, but was forced to resign when the club’s chances of bringing home the cup were destroyed.
Adriaanse turned his hand to training after retiring from professional playing at 29. He was coach at various Dutch clubs – including The Hague’s FC Den Haag which also sent him packing – and Portuguese club FC Porto in 2005. Gaining a reputation as a tough coach, he often used questionable methods. As youth trainer with Amsterdam’s Ajax, he’d often order the players to lay down on the ground and then command a teammate wearing football boots to walk over them. Because of his harsh methods, he earned himself the nickname 'Psycho Co'.
