THE HAGUE – The petition campaign by VVD member Jan Talen to bring about Rita Verdonk's return to the faction by holding a referendum among party members cannot succeed. Only the VVD party executive can call a referendum, after it has received a request to this end from ten party branches.

The spokesperson for VVD party chairman Jan van Zanen said this on Wednesday. He also pointed out that the VVD faction cannot be forced by referendum to reverse decisions. "The faction makes its decisions autonomously."

Verdonk was expelled from the faction several weeks ago after she had repeatedly criticised VVD leader Mark Rutte's political course in public. Verdonk has refused to give up her seat in Parliament so far.

The VVD is holding talks with her on a solution. One possible outcome may be for her to relinquish her seat, said Van Zanen's spokesperson.
