Ahmed Aboutaleb has been officially appointed the new mayor of Rotterdam by the cabinet

1 November 2008
ROTTERDAM - The labour minister, who was nominated earlier this month by Rotterdam council, is the first Dutch-Moroccan to become mayor of a Dutch city.
Rotterdam's right-wing Leefbaar Rotterdam party initially opposed the nomination, on the grounds that Mr Aboutaleb holds two passports.
He will succeed Ivo Opstelten, who leaves office on 1 January.
