Bottom-of-the-league Willem II have won a surprise 2-1 home victory over AZ, reducing the gap with their nearest rivals, VVV-Venlo, to two points.

Willem II’s first goal, scored by Andreas Lasnik, came after just five minutes. The equaliser by Kolbeinn Sigthorsson followed half an hour later. The decisive goal, which came on 60 minutes, was netted by Evgeniy Levchenko. AZ full-back Hector Moreno was shown red towards the end.

AZ, in fourth place, consequently failed to extend their two-point lead over ADO Den Haag in their battle for a spot in the Europa League.   cl
