AZ and PSV suffer major defeats

Sunday’s Premier League action saw AZ suffer a humiliating 5-1 away defeat at the hands of sc Heerenveen, missing an excellent opportunity to extend their narrow lead over their nearest rivals, PSV. But PSV, too, suffered a critical defeat, losing 0-2 against Feyenoord. FC Twente, for their part, narrowed the gap with PSV to a single point after beating FC Utrecht 6-2.

So far, AZ had only lost a single match, as far back as 13 August,  and had had just eight goals scored against them in the entire season. Heerenveen’s goals were netted by Bas Dost, Rajiv van La Parra, Filip Djuricic, Ramon Zomer and Luciano Narsingh. Jozy Altidore scored AZ’s single goal. By losing the fixture against Heerenveen, AZ failed to extend their three-point lead over PSV. But they will have another opportunity to do so on Wendesdya, when they face Excelsior.

PSV’s defeat by Feyenoord was just their second this season. The Feyenoord goals were scored by Sekou Cissé and Ruben Schaken just before and after half-time. PSV, who had so far only lost against AZ, could now see the league leaders extend their three-point margin, since they have yet to conclude today’s match against sc Heerenveen and are facing Excelsior on Wednesday. PSV are still four points ahead of Feyenoord.

Vitesse notched up an easy 4-0 home win over RKC Waalwijk thanks to goals netted by Jan-Arie van der Heijden, Valeri Kazashvili, Stanley Aborah and Wilfried Bony. The score could have turned out even higher since Bony and Nicky Hofs failed to convert two major opportunities. The away team, by contrast, had just one real chance, with Raold van Hout only managing to rattle the crossbar. With 25 points, Vitesse are now in sixth spot, two points behind Ajax in fourth and Feyenoord in fifth
