RIJSWIJK – Motorists should count on busy roads this afternoon. There were already 100 km in tailbacks on the motorways by 2 pm, the ANWB reported.

The organisation expects there to be more than 300 km in tailbacks at the peak time of about 5.30 pm. A normal Friday evening rush hour results in 190 km in tailbacks on average.

"That figure is quite normal however for the Friday before the Whitsunday holiday," said a spokesperson for the ANWB. The busiest sections will be on the roads headed for popular holiday destinations like Texel and the Veluwe.

The ANWB had been expecting worse in fact. "But it looks as if many people left on Thursday. Yesterday's rush hour was a bit busier than expected."
