AMSTERDAM  - An employee of ABN Amro in Rotterdam is suspected of embezzling millions from the bank, a spokesperson for the bank has confirmed.

The account manager reportedly issued business credits to people and businesses not at all entitled to such credits and kept some of the funds himself.

The bank and justice department have started an investigation into the fraud. The employee in question has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

ABN Amro says it has taken measures in the meantime to prevent this from happening again.
