AMSTERDAM – Many ABN Amro account holders are worried about whether their money is still safe at the bank in light of the takeover battle that has broken out.

The Consumers' Association says it receives about 100 telephone calls a day from concerned ABN Amro customers. The special interest organisation is asking the Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) to give more information about the risks surrounding the possible takeover of the bank.

The DNB says that there is no cause for concern. "It is a solid bank that is doing well. The authorities are following the developments very closely."

Finance Minister Wouter Bos also said on Tuesday that he has been keeping a close eye on the situation behind the scenes.
