A little bit of China in Rotterdam

24 August 2007

ROTTERDAM  - Fans of dim sum, tai chi, tea ceremonies and kites will definitely want to head to the Chinese Cultural Festival in Rotterdam this weekend. The festivities will take place on the Westersingel. All sorts of food stands, performances, exhibits and demonstrations will be set up on Saturday and Sunday.

The event will take place just around the corner from the West-Kruiskade, Rotterdam's 'Chinatown'. The Rotterdam Development Corporation (OBR) hopes the festival will "introduce the larger public to the charms of this Rotterdam 'Chinatown'."

The Chinese population is one of the oldest immigrant communities in the port city. Some 8,000 Chinese call Rotterdam home.

Rotterdam also maintains close ties with the port city of Shanghai. And construction of the European Chinese Centre will start in the Katendrecht area in 2008. For years this was the city's Chinese neighbourhood. The new centre is aimed at providing a meeting place for international and local Chinese business people, investors and residents.
