AMSTERDAM – Some 900,000 foreign tourists enjoyed the good weather in the Netherlands over the holiday weekend. Some 400,000 Dutch also went on vacation in the country, according to the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions (NBTC). Easter is the traditional start of the tourist season.

The NBTC said more German tourists visited the country and a strikingly high number of Spaniards visited Dutch cities and attractions.

Flower exhibition Keukenhof and miniature city Madurodam in Scheveningen both reported a noticeably high number of visitors from India.

Many people made day trips to the beaches and countryside, water and theme parks, zoos and large cities because of the fine weather. Many people rented boats in Friesland. About 25 percent more German visitors came to the province compared to last year’s Easter weekend. There were many “last minute” visitors to the Wadden islands, mostly from Germany.

Mainly Germans, Dutch and French-speaking Belgians visited Zeeland, though the majority of the Dutch who went on holiday went to Zuid-Limburg.
