710 crimes solved as a result of national hotline
The crime hotline Meld Misdaad Anoniem received nearly 80,000 calls last year.
THE HAGUE—The anonymous crime hotline, Report Misdeeds Anonymously, or Meld Misdaad Anoniem (M. 0800-7000), is growing in popularity; It received a flood of 76,600 calls last year.
Of these calls, 13,700 resulted in an official complaint. A total of 710 of these led to a crime being solved; 1,100 suspects were detained. The total value of the money and goods the organization confiscated amounted to 1.7 millions euros, double that of the previous year. The majority of tips related to alleged hard drugs misdeeds, or instances of illegal marijuana cultivation.
The campaign ‘Schijn bedriegt’ ("Appearances deceive") to raise awareness of trafficking in human beings proved successful, accounting for “a quarter more anonymous tips,” according to the Meld Misdaad Anoniem website. Anonymous tips also led to the arrest of one murderer, several rapes, 35 arsonists, and 50 robbers.
The rapported statistics are based on the outcome of 30 percent of useful calls.
M. was initiated in 2002 as a pilot program of the National Platform for Criminal Management (NPC). It is based on the success of similar organisations in the United States and Great Britain. Management of the non-profit organsation Meld Misdaad Anoniem is comprised up of attachés from diverse national ministries.
