BRUSSELS – Two thirds of the Dutch would be happy if Flanders were to join the Netherlands. More than 85 percent supports more intensive cooperation with Belgium. These figures emerged on Tuesday from a survey conducted by TNS Nipo and commissioned by broadcasting company RTL.

More than 60 percent of those asked said that both "countries" would benefit from union. One in five Dutch think that the House of Oranje should become the royal family of Flanders as well if the two were to join. 16 percent says the monarchy should be scrapped in both countries. 17 percent say that each country should retain its own royal family.

About five in six respondents (83 percent) think that Belgium should continue independently. 14 percent do not agree. One quarter of the Dutch think that Flanders and Wallonia should separate.
