AMSTERDAM — Police arrested 50 youths at a station in Schiedam on Friday after a train carriage was severely vandalised.
A conductor contacted the police on discovering the damage to the interior of the carriage of a Rotterdam-Delft train at 5.30am. The doors were damaged and several of the seats were thrown through the windows.
The train was halted at Schiedam Central where the alleged perpetrators were arrested.
Police spokesman Huub Veneman said the group consisted mainly of underage boys.
It is believed they were returning home to Delft after a night out in Rotterdam. Whether they were under the influence of drink or drugs had not been clarified at the time of their arrest. "But you don't commit these sorts of deeds if you are clearheaded," Veneman said. They were brought to court at 7am.
The exact extent of the damage was unclear. "I can only say there are reports of major damage," he said.
