A number of residents in the centre of Zaandam were evacuated Wednesday afternoon because of a bomb threat.

AMSTERDAM – 50 homes in the centre of Zaandam were evacuated on Wednesday afternoon because of a bomb threat, a spokesperson for the fire brigade has confirmed.

A telephone call threatening of a bomb was received by police at about 3 pm.

The caller said that an explosive device was in a residence on the corner of the Prins Hendrikstraat and Skagerrak. All buildings within a 100-metre radius have been evacuated.

The residents are being provided shelter at the Zaantheater on Nicolaasstraat, where they will have to remain until 6 pm at the earliest, said the spokesperson.
