The coffee-shops have to go because they are too close to secondary schools in the Dutch capital.

AMSTERDAM – Forty-three coffee-shops in Amsterdam will have to shut down because of their close proximity to secondary schools.

The owners will receive a letter from the council on Friday informing them they must close their shops before the end of 2011.

Local council rules state that coffee-shops selling cannabis must be at least 250 metres away from the nearest school.

A cannabis summit is held in Almere on Friday where representatives of dozens of local councils will discuss soft drugs policy and the problems with drug tourism.

A number of Belgian mayors from the border region are upset because they have not been invited to attend the summit.

Couldn't they just close the schools instead? What about my right to get stoned? ;-)
