THE HAGUE – Filmmaker Paul Verhoeven was awarded the honour Knight in de Order of the Nederlandse Leeuw (Dutch Lion) today, as was entertainer Paul de Leeuw. Cabaret artist Bert Visscher became a Knight in the Order of Oranje-Nassau, as did singer Mathilde Santing and pianist Wibi Soerjadi.

Despite these famous names, and the many other musicians, photographers, entertainers, and sports figures who were recognised for their contribution to Dutch society, most of the honours – 3336 in fact – were given to Dutch people who stood out for their volunteer work.

A total of 3,575 people received honours in the traditional "rain of honours" to mark Queen's day today, 78 more than last year. The happy recipients ranged in age from 36 to 96.
