2028 Olympics could cost Holland two billion

If the Netherlands gets to host the 2028 Olympic Games, it could cost the state two billion euros, newspaper NRC says.

This preliminary finding is the main conclusion of a cost-benefit analysis commissioned by the Sport Ministry.

The consulting agency that carried out the analysis weighed direct and indirect costs, including those required by new infrastructure, against the proceeds likely to accrue from ticket sales and the sale of broadcast rights.

In a reaction, Freedom Party MP Richard de Mos describes the projected expense as “a lot of money in a time of crisis”, adding “it's not really worth it.”

Socialist Party MP Renske Leijten warns that it is far from clear whether the final cost might not actually exceed the two billion euros currently estimated. cl/imm
