BRUSSELS – Another drug den was raided in Veldwezelt, a sub-municipality of Lanaken, last Friday, the sixth in a few months' time. The Belgian province of Limburg seems to be becoming home to more and more Dutch drug runners.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man from Maastricht. A search of the premises turned up a half kilogram of heroin.

"It is the largest find that we have been able to confiscate from drug runners so far. We suspect that there are about 200 to 300 drug couriers active in Maastricht and environs," says police commissioner Vincent Loyens.

The drug runners approach customers before they go to hash cafes in the Netherlands. They often lie in wait at petrol stations or parking lots on motorways.

Since the city of Maastricht wants to move the hash cafes ("coffeeshops") to the edges of town, the police in Lanaken fear an increase in the number of these drug runners.
