THE HAGUE - The ANWB expects severe traffic congestion on Friday as 1.1 million Dutch start their summer holidays.

Those headed south are advised to avoid Nijmegen. The ANWB says roads will be crowded around the city because of the four day walking marathon in progress in the area. The annual carnival in Tilburg, expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors, will also cause extra traffic.

Local road works will cause long delays. The ANWB says that there is a good chance that tailbacks will build up on the A16 near Rotterdam this weekend. Closed lanes could also cause delays on the A2 near Eindhoven and in Zuid Limburg, on the A9 near Amstelveen and the A73 near Malden.
