10pc of illegal persons requested asylum
Research indicates the number of illegal immigrants has declined since 2003.

AMSTERDAM - Approximately ten per cent of the illegal persons living in the Netherlands have ever requested asylum.
That is between the 6,000 and 11,000 illegal persons, according to research which Minister for Alien Affairs Rita Verdonk (VVD) announced on Thursday, reported De Telegraaf.
Verdonk gave instructions last year to conduct the research because it was unclear how many rejected asylum seekers have come into illegality.
From the research it would further appear that the estimated number of illegal persons has decreased since 2003.
Between 1997 and 2003 our country counted between 125,000 and the 225,000 illegal persons. Now there would be between 75,000 and 185,000.
The majority are of non-European origin.
