19/12/2006Dental care - Dutch style

New to the Netherlands or suffering from tooth pain? Our guide to the Dutch dental healthcare system will send you in the right direction.

As you'd expect, dental care in the Netherlands is performed by dentists with university-level qualifications.

A sight we all have to endure now and again

Every dentist (tandarts) working in the Netherlands is also registered with the government.

The quality of dental care in the Netherlands is good on a comparative basis with other developed countries.

And like most things in the Netherlands, there are very few variations in the standard of care, either in terms of poor or excellent treatment.

Dutch people visit a dentist relatively often. Some 85 percent of all Dutch nationals go to the dentist once or more every year.

As a result, the standard of Dutch dental health is high.

Surgery types

Almost every Dutch dental surgery is owned privately. There are no state-run surgeries.

Most surgeries (65 percent) are modest businesses with one dentist and a dental assistant.

But an increasing number of larger dental surgeries with multiple dentists, assistants and dental hygienists are opening up, especially in the larger cities.

These surgeries are better able to offer more and varying types of dental treatments.

Many Dutch dental surgeries are no longer taking on new patients (or are accepting only a small number of new patients).

Fees

DentistThe price of dental treatment is determined by the Dutch government and in general is slightly lower than in other developed countries.

Every dentist in the Netherlands is obligated to charge these fees and abide by the dentistry code.

Every possible form of treatment that can be performed by a dentist is designated by a uniform code, which is also used by your healthcare insurer.

The biggest problem that I find with Dentists in Amsterdam are their opening times. They are open only on weekdays between 9 to 5. Ypu have to wait almost a month for an afspraak. The last time it got cancelled on that morning and it was another 4 weeks wait before I could get another. Its very frustrating.
