Every Friday sees a book market on the Spui, a great place to go and people-watch or have a coffee on one of the terraces. Bargains are scarce but the real draw is the atmosphere.

Round the corner on Koningsplein is Scheltema, the largest bookshop in Amsterdam with more than 125,000 books, as well as classical music CDs, computer supplies and a coffee bar on the first floor.
