12/09/200748 hours of film fun and an expat in trouble

48 hours of film fun and an expat in trouble If you don’t think films completed from conception to end in a weekend are worth watching, then don’t read this.

“Le lait, le lait,” the words haunted me after viewing the 19 short movies; all fruit of the 48 Hour Film Project (48HFP) held recently in Amsterdam, and soon to be held again in Utrecht.

Nineteen teams worked over the weekend of 25-27 May to complete short films (4-7 minutes long) of a selected genre ranging from comedy to horror. All of the teams had to include the phrase ‘Water bij de wijn doen’ (to compromise, back out, moderate) in their script somewhere.

Le lait, le lait: where will they find it?

The resulting shorts were then premiered at Het Ketelhuis in Amsterdam the following week, after which the audience and a panel of judges voted for their favourite films.

'Le lait, le lait', about two aliens grounded on earth, in search of milk to fuel their spacecraft’s ascent back into the galaxy, may not have won the ‘Best Film’ award but had the audience giggling the whole way through, and walked off with the Audience Choice award along with the short 'Baxt'.

Baxt: facin' up to it.

Other award-winning films, all of which you can view on YouTube, include the 'Best Film' award winner, enigmatic film 'Room 303' and 'Jammer man' – in the Superhero category. The 'hero' in this case was seen by some viewers as a kind of ‘stalker’ with superpowers, who could perhaps have prevented the murder of Theo van Gogh.

An expat in trouble

Film Plan B, by the team Celluloid Zeroes, led by US expat Jason Jackson, is about a ‘drug tourist’ who gets caught up in Dutch 'policy' more than bureaucracy – who says the Dutch plain clothes police stick out in a crowd?. The film, amazingly shot with a digital camera rather than a movie camera, won both the 'Best Editing' judges' award and 'Best use of Amsterdam Landmarks'.

Jammer man: only powerless when
faced with a girl he likes.

Signing up for the 48HFP in Utrecht now

According to Chris Parker, Producer for the 48HFP in the Netherlands, the 48HFP's first visit to the Netherlands was such a success that it is running again in Utrecht.

No idle words of praise from a man promoting his project, this opinion is backed up by the Programme Director of the Netherlands film festival in Utrecht, Herman de Wit, who was curious enough to come and view the screenings of the May 48HFP .

The next level: winner in
the 'Best Special Effects' category.

De Wit was so impressed that he would like to screen the shorts made by the next 48HFP teams on Thursday 4 October to mark the end of this annual Dutch film industry showcase of recent features, shorts, animation, documentaries and television dramas. www.filmfestival.nl

“Anyone can join the 48HFP, amateur and professional filmmakers are all welcome,” says Chris Parker.

“Even if you don't have a team, you can sign up to be recruited by a team leader, on the website. The reason for all of this is to have an amazing amount of fun!” he adds.

You've got 5 days to register

Teams wishing to participate need to register by 17 September.
