Van Basten concerned at Basel pitch - even though the grass is Dutch! 17/06/2008 00:00

Dutch coach Marco van Basten has expressed concern after Euro 2008 organisers decided to change the turf at Basel’s St-Jakob-Park stadium three days before the first of two quarter-finals due to take place there.

UEFA decided to act after heavy rainfall rendered the pitch akin to a soggy potato patch and the surface is being replaced with new turf brought in from the Netherlands.

The Dutch are due to face either Sweden or Russia in Basel on Saturday. ”I think it is strange to change the turf three days before a match,” van Basten said yesterday.

”I saw the Champions League final in Moscow [where the turf was also changed shortly before the match] and the players were slipping around a lot. It is not good for the quality of football. It is a concern.”

A convoy of 26 refrigerated lorries has transported the new turf from the Netherlands, with installation due to be completed by midday today (17 June).
