Amsterdam's Jaap Eden skating rink celebrates its 50th anniversary on 8 and 9 December with a special program. Photographer Janet de Jong takes some snaps to encourage would-be skaters to take to the ice.Ice-skating is popular in the Netherlands, and know where to go to test the ice when the temperatures drop.
This year, Jaap Eden Ijsbanen, which claims to be the oldest 400 metre artificial ice (kunstijs) skating rink in the world, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a special program on 8 and 9 December.
Located in the East of Amsterdam in the Watergraafsmeer district at Radioweg 64, Jaap Eden outdoor skating rink is open from October-April. It also has a covered rink, and a beginner's corner. Facilities include a restaurant and lockers (50 euro cents). Entrance costs EUR 6.30 for adults, EUR 3.80 for children under 16. The Jubilee program is free.
