20/03/2011Is there still a "typical Dutch" snack food?

Is there still a "typical Dutch" snack food? A layer of French fries, then kebab meat, sauce and cheese. Throw it under the grill, top it off with some lettuce and voila! The “hairdresser”.

This popular snack food has replaced the traditional Dutch frikandel (a sort of deep-fried sausage) and croquette (a mash of meat or potato coated in breadcrumbs and deep-fried). Traditional snacks are still available – and still popular – but the typical Dutch snack bar has become much more multi-cultural.

The “hairdresser” was conceived in a Rotterdam kebab shop and, with 1800 kcal, it’s regarded as a “calorie bomb”. But it’s not the only multi-cultural snack on offer in the Netherlands – customers with a craving can also choose from Surinamese, Turkish, Moroccan, Israeli, Javan or other non-Dutch options to satisfy their snack or post-party urge.

The question is: is there still a “typical Dutch” snack food?

"croquette (a mash of meat or potato coated in breadcrumbs and deep-fried)."

??
It's spelled "kroket" and there's no potato inside from what I know.
(not that I'm an expert or anything!)

Methinks you're getting your Dutch "cuisine" mixed up with your French...
