Dining & Cuisine

Eating the local food is one of the most important ways to experience local culture--although you may want to avoid some of the local delicacies:  raw herring for instance, doesn't go down so well with most expats!  You may find it strange that the Dutch smother their chips (frites) with mayonnaise, but is Dutch cuisine really so bad? The Belgians, who are famed for their frites, eat them with mayonnaise too--here's the story of their humble roots. You may have wondered if the Dutch Frikandel really that unhealthy. We find out what's in it--and how to make traditional Dutch croquettes.

Gourment shopping in Amsterdam

In her series, A taste of Amsterdam (I) and  A taste of Amsterdam (II), food blogger Paola Duque-Westbeek takes us on a tour of  gourmet shops and markets in Amsterdam.

Expatica's Dining & Cuisine section also carries a few local recipes. Find out how to make Dutch apple tart. When it comes to making food from home, it might not be so easy finding the ingredients as one American in Amsterdam discovers on her quest to find the ingredients for cupcakes in the Netherlands.

Travel and tourism

Expatica Netherlands' Travel & Tourism section highlights tours in Europe, including trips in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. If you're a school leaver and want to get paid for travelling around the world, try it!  We offer some tips for women travelling alone to help keep you safe and make friends on the open road.
