1-11 July
Julidans

Amsterdam’s Leidseplein will be swarming with movement – both inside its main stages and without – with the arrival this week of the 19th edition of Julidans, the forever-restless gathering of up-and-comers, just-arrivers and high-fliers of international dance.  With more than two dozen performances – and a few film events, too – highpoints include “Sutra,” a kung fu/contemporary dance hybrid featuring 17 monks from China’s Shaolin temple (8-11 July); “Babemba,” in which a leading company from Burkina Faso will tell of African streetlife, politics and possibilities via febrile dancers and traditional instruments (on the 10th); and “I Like to Watch Too,” for which many corners of the Paradiso will be filled with micro-experiments in movement, sound, audience participation and more (4/7).  There’ll be free gigs in Vondelpark, and – a first – five days of shows in Bijlmer Park.  So get moving yourself, and check out all the details at www.julidans.nl.  (Steve Schneider)

Classic Rock: Crosby, Stills & Nash

Back in the nearly-unimaginable day when talent and inspiration – rather than marketing and cheekbones – most heavily influenced musical success, Crosby, Stills & Nash were titans.  All veterans of top-tier ‘60s bands, and all contributors to some of the decade’s defining tunes, the three formed a folk-rock powerhouse that bumped up standards for close-harmony singing and poured forth tidal waves of exemplary songcraft.  Their hippie-tinted moment passed quickly, but many of their early songs – “Wooden Ships,” “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Our House,” “Helpless,” “Teach Your Children,” etc., etc. – have gained stature with age.  Breakups, turbulence, legal grief and more have trailed the group, and word is out that the current tour may be their last.  So while tickets for this gig are scarce, you probably shouldn’t put off making the effort.  (Steve Schneider)  Heineken Music Hall, 20.00h, E65-E59
