It is a low-contact game, with five players and a goalie playing at the same time. It is an easy game to pick up, as the rules and the techniques are not as complicated as, say, field hockey or ice hockey. HSK has now some five teams playing at all levels in the competition: the first team has been Dutch champions several times, a junior team (16 to 19 year olds) has just started this last season and the club also fields a ladies and mixed team.

Morris dancing
Utrecht Morris Team & Maids of the Mill
Website: www.utrechtmorris.nl/umt/english.php (for the men's side)
Website: www.utrechtmorris.nl/maids/ (for the women's side)

The Utrecht Morris Team (UMT), founded in 1979, is a team of men who perform traditional Morris dances from the Cotswolds in the southern Midlands of England. In 1984 a women's side called the "Maids of the Mill" was founded within the same association. This means that Utrecht has the only women's Morris side on the European continent except Great Britain! Only men dance as the UMT and only women dance as the Maids, but on a number of occasions the two sides dance together. Both the UMT and the Maids are friendly pleasure clubs that meet once a week in the city of Utrecht to practice. However, regardless of how much fun it is sometimes, real hard work goes into practicing the Morris dances before they can be performed in public. Both sides perform numerous times during the course of a year, sometimes at their own initiative, but also regularly when requested or booked. It goes without saying that they go to England at least once a year to meet and dance with other Morris sides. In 1991, the UMT became a member of The Morris Ring, the English umbrella organisation for men's sides. The Maids are a member of The Morris Federation, an association of self-governing Morris clubs which aims to encourage and maintain interest in the practice of morris dancing by women and men of all ages. Anyone who is interested in the Morris (dancer or musician, beginner or experienced) and wants to come and take a look on a practice evening, please get in touch with the Bagman. Visit our website for more information.
