15/11/2011Doing yoga in the Netherlands: a beginner's guide

Doing yoga in the Netherlands: a beginner's guide Don't know your asana from your elbow? Here is a short introduction to yoga and where you can do it in the Netherlands.

To many people, the word yoga conjures up the image of a long-haired, bearded Indian man sitting in the lotus position and chanting. It has been increasingly in the public eye, mainly due to celebrities such as Madonna, Geri Halliwell and Gwyneth Paltrow singing its praises.

Reported improvements such as toned upper arms, trim stomach and firm thighs and bums have encouraged them to take up yoga classes, but for the uninitiated and uninformed, what is it all about? Yoga originated in India around 6000 years ago. The practice sometimes seems to have an air of mystery about it, which perhaps prevents many people from trying a class. It can be seen as new-age, 'alternative' or a bit of a fad in the exercise world. In reality it is a holistic practise that benefits body, mind and spirit.

People take up yoga for a surprisingly wide range of reasons: to gain flexibility, to tone-up or lose weight, to improve their ability to relax or to prepare their body for a physical event such as childbirth. Regular practice of yoga will improve your general fitness and body shape, make you stronger, calmer and more able to cope with the stresses and strains of life. Types of yoga Hatha (or physical) yoga is broken down into eight stages or limbs.

Side twistTraditionally these are followed progressively to reach Samadhi, the last stage, where the spirit is liberated and becomes 'at one' with the universe. Yoga practised in the west mainly encapsulates stages three and four. Stage three (Asana) is the practise of the postures or poses and stage four (Pranayama) is rhythmic control of the breath.

There are many styles of Hatha yoga currently being taught, all of which have slightly different emphases.

  • Astanga yoga is the form of yoga currently enjoying the most attention. Also known as power yoga, the moves or transitions between asanas are performed at a higher speed than usual, thus providing an aerobic workout, missing in the alternative yoga forms.
  • Iyengar yoga, based on the teachings of BKS Iyengar from Pune, India, concentrates on the postural alignment of the body and limbs. The practice makes use of ropes, blocks and belts to aid in the attainment of the asanas.
  • Sivananda yoga focuses on the flow of energy in the spine. This style is built around a specific sequence of twelve postures or poses.

What to look for in a yoga class

Yoga includes elements such as stretching, balancing and posturing - the combination of which can seem like a contortionist act to the newcomer. However, a good yoga teacher will tailor the postures to suit the different abilities within a class. Some classes will focus heavily on meditation and visualisation, but for others, meditation simply refers to the period of cool-down or relaxation at the end of the session. Controlled breathing is a hugely important part of the practice.

Yoga is suitable for both men and women and can be enjoyed by the full range of fitness abilities. Even if you have trouble touching your toes, yoga can still be open to you. Classes can be found by looking in the telephone book or by recommendation from friends or work colleagues.

BridgeThere are numerous teachers in the larger cities and a few are listed below. Try out one or two sessions before committing yourself to a lengthy course, as your relationship with your yoga teacher is one of the most important factors in your enjoyment and progress of yoga.

I Disagree With All Of you.. First of all its Yog not Yoga... Western changed our indian yog with name yoga...
Now lets Take a look of what all this Yog is all about

1.yog simple meaning is to live a godly life means joining to god..
2.Western confined yog to body only.. but yog is far more than body
3. Body Healing by the Asanas Different Postures is just a Beginning of Your Spritual Journey its the Preliminary One..
4.Yog is used by us(Indian ) for years to be one with the god..

Categories OF Yoga..
1.Raja Yoga
2.Hatha Yoga
3.Karma YOga
4.Bhakti Yoga
5.Gyana Yoga

All these divisions are on the basis of type of nature prevaing in the human..
One can choose any way to reach god...

The Asanas western choose and thus creating a different science(YOGA) is just some simple EXERCISES from the HATHA YOGA(whose main aim is to make the body healthy)..

So if u want to do YOg Dont just confined with the body..

I offer a combination of hatha yoga, meditation and relaxation in Amsterdam's Nieuwe West / you can contact me at yoga.nieuwewest@gmx.com for more information or visit the link to the Expatica classifieds at the bottom of this message.

I´d like to respond to Ashish Trivedi. I found taking yoga lessons at the Sai Mithra so useful in helping me find my spiritual balance as well as health while going through a difficult time in my life that I trained for three years at the Sai MIthra yoga centrum in Amsterdam so that I could teach yoga safely to others. It has become part of my life, although I do not make a profit teaching one day a week (I have a regular job), I charge students for my time so that I can pay for the space I rent and also make sure I provide quality mats, belts, cushions and blankets to use during the class.

Times are a changing and yoga in the West is employed to enable people with a usual busy lifestyle cope with the demands of Western life and find some space for themselves. Through working through the body and mind this is possible. East and West are merging in their convictions that energy flows freely and blockages create illness. Meditation and yoga help us to purify our bodies and cut through the chatter to a quiet place within ourselves.

I tried Iyengar Yoga Center and i absolutely didn't like it. Many teachers are unpatient or not very nice. But the most annoying, that in every lesson we spent awfully lot of time with building up Things for doing 1 position, including moving benches, chairs, folding many blankets, than putting everything back, then doing set-up for another postion, wood-bricks on, out etc. Half of the lesson goes with this, and i find it totally unnecessary: for yoga you don't need more than a sticky mat.

The other thing that it has no atmosphere at all: the class is way too bright, and it's just about doing positions, nothing else. Zero spirituality.

On the other hand Unlimited Health Yoga Center is not listed here. It's a close-to-center studio with affordable prices, where they have really cool english language lessons with a guy from india, who teaches yoga with passion, and you can really learn from him.
