15/01/2011New Year's resolution #1: Lose weight!

New Year's resolution #1: Lose weight! Here in the Netherlands the most popular New Year’s resolution is to lose weight. More than two million people are suddenly determined to shed those kilos.

About 53 percent of Dutch men and 42 percent of Dutch women are overweight. Even so, at an average weight of 88 kilograms for men and 75 kilograms for women, they are among the least obese populations in Europe. Still, after Christmas and New Year the consumption of cakes and candy dips temporarily and the gyms become quite crowded.

We sent reporter Roel Maalderink to a busy shopping street to find out whether people are managing to keep their resolutions.
