17/01/2012Editor's guide to Fitness & Sports in the Netherlands

Editor's guide to Fitness & Sports in the Netherlands Here's a brief guide to our Fitness & Sports section in the Netherlands.

Moving abroad isn’t just about starting a new job, learning the language and setting up home. Once you’ve arrived and settled in, you’ll probably want to find out where you can play your favourite sport, the best places to run or walk in your neighbourhood (North Holland) or where to find the best dance classes or sailing lessons nearest to you.

Start by checking out the local expat leagues, expat gyms, and other sports associations using A guide to Dutch sports clubs and associations.

Why not take up a national sport? For instance, in the Netherlands, why not try sailing or ice-skating or take to your bike and do some touring through the Dutch landscapes. Even if your sport is obscure, you’ll find that the Netherlands will have a club associated with it, whether it’s football, cricket, rugby, skiing, swimming, tennis, squash, baseball, scuba diving or kite skiing and ice windsurfing in the winter.

Jogging in the Netherlands

Take up jogging this year and train for local marathons. If running a marathon is too much for you, why not try jogging with your dog!

Expat and local telegraph wire

Use connections to find the locations of the best places to practice a sport or to keep fit. Ask other expats how they keep fit and read the results of Expatica's survey on how expats rate their level of fitness since they moved to the Netherlands!  Find out about local dancing, martial arts and  yoga  schools. Want a second opinion, then ask via the Expatica Forums. The best result can only be a healthier and happier you.

International sports clubs and other groups

If you’d like to join an international sports club, then check out Expatica’s Groups & Clubs listings  and also the A-Z listings by category under Groups & Clubs and Fitness. Existing clubs include the The Royal Scottish Country, Amstelveense Rugby Club (ARC) and The Randstad Harings dive club. You can even take up Morris dancing in the Netherlands!
