RNW video of the speech given by HRH Princess Máxima, in which she welcomes microfinance being looked at realistically and critically. Her address was given to those attending RNW's Microfinance: who profits? event in The Hague.

The princess was there not only because of the Dutch royal family's longstanding connections with RNW, but more importantly in her role as a Special Advisor to the United Nations on this very issue.

In her speech, the princess warned that some microfinance institutions (MFIs) attach greater importance to their own profit than sustainable development. Microfinance, she explained, needs always to be embedded in a total package in order to conbat poverty effectively.

She added that small entrepreneurs such as tortilla baker Linda Flores, who was also at the event in The Hague, need to be able to send their children to school.
