07/09/2010ABN AMRO: Where expats prefer to bank (sponsored contribution)

ABN AMRO: Where expats prefer to bank (sponsored contribution) ABN AMRO has developed original and specific services to cater to the needs of their expatriate clients.

As summer draws to an end, it’s time to look back and reminisce; but will all our memories be fond ones?

For many expats, summer meant travelling like crazy, visiting friends and family or simply grabbing a short break away. Change might be as good as a rest, but also can be straining, especially when change brings about loss as Olo Chojnacka experienced this summer.

Chojnacka, who lives and works in Amsterdam, has a British mother and Polish father.  “I went to visit my parents in July and during my journey to the UK, I am not even sure precisely when, my mobile and wallet with all my money that I took with me got stolen,” says Chojnacka – I was terrified. I still had to get to Cardiff from London somewhere and really didn’t know what to do.”

'Help, I just lost my cash!'

“We get a lot of ‘I just lost all my cash’ calls,” says Michiel Hilders Director Preferred Banking Expats at ABN AMRO.  “We already have managed to gain impressive experience I think.  When our clients lose their money through mishap, they can usually just go to any bank that is nearby and withdraw the cash they need. “

Multi-lingual account manager

As well as providing the usual financial services and products--payment products, savings products, loans, mortgages, insurance Products, investments and credit cards--ABN AMRO has developed original and specific services to cater to the needs of their fast-growing sector of expatriate clients.

For instance, ABN AMRO helps expats through the process of opening a bank account through assigning them an account manager to make sure their needs are met.   After this, they simply need to visit an ABN AMRO branch and sign the contract.

And language isn’t a problem. ABN AMRO’s international client department also provides services in over 20 languages on the floor including Chinese, Japanese, English, German, Spanish, and Italian.

Online banking in English

Expats can also benefit from free internet banking in the English language, enabling them to manage their accounts from anywhere in the world.

Cutting through red tape in the Netherlands

“When we started our department for expats we found out that they usually get into a vicious circle of bureaucracy when they arrive to Netherlands,” Hilders explains.  “They can’t open an account without an address and they can’t find a permanent apartment without an account.”

To help expats manoeuvre, ABN AMRO allows expats to open a bank account with a temporary address and they have to provide their BSN Number within 2 months.

“For our customers’ convenience, we also schedule our appointments in our branches all over Netherlands,” says Hilders.

This level of flexibility and service for international clients seems to work.
“When we started we had one thousand expats and within a year this number had grown to around nine thousand!”
