The Dutch National Opera perform Verdi's 1859 work based on Eugen Scribe's play Gustave III or Le Bal Masqué, which was censored at the time because of the play being about a reigning monarch in Sweden. The plot revolves around King Gustav III, assissinated by his best friend who suspected him of having an affair with his wife.
