- Anyone lived in Reading or that area before?QUOTE (laureljoanna @ Jun 16 2008, 09:42 AM) are we talking chav town? if you get my drift, because I certainly wouldn't like to move to one of those after spending a dreadful year in Braintree in Essex which sounds similar to what you describe :(Oh yes its chav and worse!Plenty of metal grills on shop fronts and serving hatches inside shops. Also yes it is filthy, the place and the people. I haven't been to Reading for a long time and intend never to again. I made the mistake of walking around at night. I was quite near the centre looking for a recomended indian takeaway, but suddenly found myself lost in some unlit ghetto like area feeling very alone and quite a bit scared. I did find the takeaway eventually (it was good) and I got out alive. It is a very divided place with different areas taken up by different nationalities/religions. I do not intend to be political, divided is the wrong word, what I mean is ... you could end up living in an area which may make you feel a bit uncomfortable/lonely if everyone (and i mean everyone) in your neighbourhood is from Whereverland talking Whateverlanguage and you dont.University term times, there are plenty of students puking up in middle of town staggering infront of cars. Sumertime they are all sent home and the Uni dorms are empty so let out to foriegn language students. Rich pickings for the muggers!Someone here says Sussex is nice - yes I was born there . Yes its nice but the drive is crap to London.Have you thought of maybe Basingstoke - tho I dont know much about it. Also if you want commuter belt and VERY nice places Alton in Hampshire has been swallowed into the circle but prices rose accordingly.Good luck and dont go out alone at night!!!, 02/07/2008 07:46
- Smoking ban in the UK, can someone tell me the true facts?Your Mum sounds just like mine!I got exactly the same story. And she tries to get me to stop smoking and counts the beers out.Thankfully never caught me shagging!I haven't been back to UK for 2years - but am doing so in 3 weeks. It will be interesting to see how it's changed things down the pub.I shall be going up my 'local' here in NL later today to see if I can still have a smoke with a pint. I expect I will be able to. The coffeeshop was business as usual yesterday, still handing out cigarettes to skinup with.haha - on the growing hash thing, I got (wrong word) my mum & sis growing it back in UK. They had plastic flowers on them for disguise in the window. They dont even smoke or cook it - they just think the leaves are pretty. They compete for who gets the most fingers like normal people compete with sunflowers.Sorry, this hasn't answered anything for you at all, just like hearing about your mum.PS: I get my daughter to water mine!, 02/07/2008 07:26
- used rail tickets??hee hee i like that!it makes perfect sense now.Schipol must be real rich picking I bet. I can just imagine all the people thinking they'll take stuff home to impress their mates but go chicken and ditch it last minute. Or the boys getting shredded by girlfriends and told to bin it or they are dumped when they get back home.regardsthnx for making sense , 28/06/2008 12:00
- scrabble scrambleC1000 seem to have the price wrong on there computer today. This http://www.worldwideshoppingmall.co.uk/toy...le-to-go-uk.asp is on sale for only €1,95!!!So I got one,,, but my problem is my dutch is not so good yet; I can't understand the rules.I think it may be quite new??? So, all i found on the internet was this ..."Players randomly pick 7 of a set of 12 dice (which have the standard Scrabble values, as well as a blank), roll them, then place a word on the special 9x9 board within a 60-second time limit. There is at most one word to be built on; when a new word is formed, the previous word's dice are removed. The first player to score 200 points or more wins."please can anyone elaborate on the rules?many thanx!, 27/06/2008 11:51
- First week as ex-pat, any tips?!Amersfoort is one of the loveliest places I've ever had the pleasure to live in. Get here quick while there is some sun inbetween the gigantic thunderstorms we just had.The two squares in middle of town are lovely for pavement culture and people watching with a beer. They probably still got lots more weekly music festival kinda things over the next few weeks for summer.Don't worry BONI is up in Soest a few miles away. How did this topic get to supermarkets anyway? Lots supermarkets in all the kwartiers.Amersfoort is growing very fast all the time. The old middle bit and some new media place turning up by Eem. It is growing and swallowing up smaller pockets like Hooglanderveen & Katenbroek, & Vathorst is just growing now for about 4 years with about 7 more to go I think. What part of Amersfoort you moving to?, 04/06/2008 12:16
