by daverave on 23/11/2010Dear Jean-Baptiste,
I'm a guy, 35, from Israel living in the Netherlands. Good looking (so I'm told..), highly educated and with a prestigious job.
The thing is, I've been living here for a few years, and have had zero dating success. Well written internet dating profiles get no responses. Been to several speed dating events and never received a match. My question: can you give some advice to foreign guys wanting to date local women? I know I'm not the only one with difficulties. Any advice?
by Jean-Baptiste TrannoyDear Dave,
So you have looks, the brain, the job and no girlfriend? Let me rub some salt into the wounds by adding that there are countless high-school dropouts collecting dates while living off welfare. I understand how frustrating this can be. This game seems unfair doesn’t it? The truth is that in love, you don’t get what you deserve. You only get as much as your flirting skills allow you to.
Bear in mind that this is not a rational but an emotional process. In order to be successful on dates, you have to be able to emote, generate attraction and build trust. Simply relying on your good looks and presenting your professional accomplishments will fall short every time. While dating is allegedly a numbers game, there is some wisdom in Albert Einstein’s famous quote: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
So ask yourself: what have you done specifically to improve the way you communicate, both verbally and nonverbally, with the women you meet? If you don’t know where to start, this article will give you some essential tips:

You say you have put up a well-written profile on an Internet dating website and got no response. Women on these sites are bombarded by personal messages from guys. I suspect this gives them little time and incentive to browse for more men. If you decide to give Internet dating another shot, be more proactive this time.
Speed-dating is a false good idea. On the bright side, the women you meet at such events are single and actively looking for someone. However, in their view, you do fall into the not-so-desirable category of men who can’t find a date for themselves.
I was recently invited to a French TV interview. It took place in a Parisian bar right after a speed-dating event. The participants went out for a break and one of them, a pretty brunette started chatting with me.
She admitted that she was usually not very interested by the men she met in speed-dating and rarely notified a match. She did ask for my phone number though and flirted outrageously with the bartender. In short, people that do not need to attend a speed-dating event were seen as more attractive. The only way around it is to think out of the box by creating your own rules. That way you’ll make and unusual and positive first impression. Remember: dates are not job interviews, leave your CV at home.
Finally, I believe that opportunities abound in The Netherlands for single men to meet incredible women. For one, Dutch men are far from being Casanovas. More importantly, women in The Netherlands can prove rather friendly when approached in a confident, sincere and playful way. Since you are Israeli, I recall a client from Tel-Aviv marvelling at how open to conversation Dutch girls can be.
So before you consider relocating in order to end your dry-spell, get out of your comfort zone, take chances in real-life situations and become a smoother version of yourself.

I rent an apartment with inclusive services (electricity, gas etc). The landlord hasn't paid the electricity and gas company for 6mths. Every time I raise the issue with the landlord he says that the bill is resolved, but two months ago a representative of the company visited the apartment and threatened to cut off services if the bill isn't paid ASAP. Each week I receive letters to the landlord from the company and debt collectors.
What can I do, please?
Thank you!

Read Answer by RitaI am going to rent an apartment. The agency only gives me a contract in English, saying there is no Dutch version. Is this legal? Is an English contract valid? They also want me to sign an extra letter saying in case I misbehave or do not pay the rent, they can kick me out without going to court. Is this legal? And they want the first payment before signing the contract. I understand that in NL once they have said they will rent to me, they cannot easily change their mind. Can I rely on this?

I suffer of coeliac disease and I would like to know if the basic health insurance covers the costs of dietary gluten free products. I read on my insurance booklet that I must refer to the Dutch Health Care Insurance Regulations, but I don't understand Dutch. Hope you can help me.
