Youth prisons are substandard 10/09/2007 00:00

10 September 2007

THE HAGUE – Juvenile detention centres are not succeeding in rehabilitating and treating delinquent youth. Nor can all the 14 youth correctional facilities in the Netherlands guarantee the safety of those detained.

This is contained in an inspection report presented to state secretary for justice Nebahat Albayrak on Monday. Four inspection services jointly came to the conclusion that the youth detention centres are not doing their job adequately.

In six institutions there is a serious risk of an unsafe living and treatment environment for the young people. The inspectorates say that the correctional facilities are more focused on tackling problems rather than preventing them.
