Wage moderation is no longer enough 05/09/2007 00:00

5 September 2007

WAGENINGEN  - The Netherlands is lacking ambition, according to Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende.

People should exploit their entrepreneurial skills more and launch innovative products on the market to compete with China and India. Wage moderation is not enough to keep pace with these countries.

“We need to leave the mentality of mediocrity behind us and let the entrepreneurial blood flow more quickly through our veins,” Balkenende said this at the opening of the academic year at the University of Wageningen on Tuesday.

In the past we mainly achieved economic growth through wage moderation and higher labour participation. This model no longer suffices for the future.
