THE HAGUE – The Liberal VVD wants to significantly lower the taxes charged on legacies. It has proposed this in its alternative budget for 2009.
The party announced this on its website on Tuesday. Party leader Mark Rutte said the inheritance tax was "the most unjustified tax in existence."
He pointed out that residents already have to pay income tax and wealth tax. "When you die the tax authority comes by for a third visit."
The rates for inheritance tax now reach 68 percent. The VVD plans would make 50 percent the maximum.
